Re Mini Dachsund
by: Christine

Thanks for your advice. I think we have to find some healthy treats that he will do anything for even when very distracted. At home, when we train him, we use bits of his dry food or some of his fave milky dog biscuits broken up, if we're out he's just not bothered with them. I've tried all sorts of treats and besides dog choccy drops, he turns his nose up! Our other problem with him is a sensitive tummy. I used to give him bits of apple, sweet potato, blueberries etc and whilst he loved them, we suffered trying to clean up his poo :(
We've started back just taking the kids without scooters and staying all together which is keeping him calm. So think we'll go back to basics as you suggest and take it slow.
Thanks
Chris

Mini Dachshund pulling when walking with children
by: Judy - Dachshund Owner Guide

Hello Christine,

Problem with walking your puppy with the family, your doxie pulls and chases after the children on scooters.

Perhaps the easiest thing to do is not walk your dog at the same time as the children ride their scooters but if you wish the family to walk together then you may need to spend time training your puppy.

My suggestion is you start at home where no doubt the puppy loves playing with the kids running and chasing you will need to establish that this behavior does not happen on the street when walking. This will take some time and a little patience.

Start with every one going for a walk staying together, no scooters, then slowly let the children move a little ahead talk to your puppy and give a treat when he walk nicely with you.

You may need to stop occasionally and give a treat and praise for walking with you and not pulling.

When this is working well, introduce the scooters first staying with the group and the slowly moving a little ahead again praise and give reward to your puppy walking and not pulling when he starts to pull stop and wait.

When he waits with you give a treat and praise I think it will not take him long to understand what behavior gets him a treat.

Once this behavior is working well you may find that the praise will be sufficient and only need an odd treat to work.

Try to give him a break during the walk where perhaps he can have a run and a play eg in a park.

Puppies are very active and love to run but try to ensure he is not over excited when starting out on the walk.

Hope this helps you with your walking problem.
