Diet is important
by: Rachel

I have over 30 years of experience with this breed alone. Specifically short hairs, which seem more prone to skin issues.

My current dog has VERY short hair, and no hair at all on her chest and neck. Her name is Madison. You're correct that some dogs have pattern baldness.

If your dog isn't on a high quality diet, I'd highly suggest it. Madison had issues where regions of her fur would just fall out for no apparent reason. The most noticeable one was near her shoulder. I quickly changed her diet from Orijen Regional Red to Orijen Six Fish. She's also getting a squirt of salmon oil 1x a day. Her fur has grown back in and she's VERY slick.

You may want to test to see if grain in the dog food is causing issues, or switch to a food that is more fish based. I also HIGHLY recommend adding fish oil to the daily diet. It doesn't take much for a small dog (teaspoon per 10 pounds a day).

dog's hair loss
by: Lynn Stevens

My dog had a similar problem and she had to be put on thyroid medication...her hair all came back in. I would have your vet do a thyroid check.

Losing Hair
by: Melanie P

Please have your doxie checked by a vet ASAP. Our dog began losing hair on his tail and stomach. He was diagnosed with Cushing's Disease. I don't think that they have a cure for it but our vet had medicine made specifically for Buster in Arizona. He was about 12 when diagnosed and passed away at 14. Hope this helps

Hair loss in puppy
by: Anonymous

He did see two vets one because his was out of town. Said it was not mange could be like exema and gave me fish oil capsules to give him once a day. Took him to his vet upon return also said not mange or scabies. Calling it male pattern baldness. He gave me melatonin to give him 2x.s a day. Says should see some hair growth in 4 wks or so??? Sure hope so. He does not itch excessively either. Only 9 mo old.

Loosing hair
by: Judy

Perhaps it would be a good idea to check with your vet as it could be mange, or an allergy but this usually makes dogs lick and bite so causing hair loss.
