Learn about the different types of dog leashes and leads available

"Find just the right dog lead for your needs. "

Dog leashes and leads are necessary to control your dog and keep him safe when out walking or training.

When choosing a lead for a small dog that does not pull hard, a nylon or cotton lead is good.

Leather leads are good when you have a larger dog with more pulling power.

The length of the lead or leash depends on what you and your dog are doing. When wanting to keep your dog close to you a 4-foot lead is good, for obedience work a 6-foot lead may be more suitable.

Retractable leashes are excellent once your puppy has had some lead training.

Dog leads are usually made from leather, vinyl or braided nylon in a choice of colors, and patterns, sometimes available in sets, collar and lead.

Lead and leashes come in different lengths usually 4 – 6 ft and width usually ½ - ¾ in wide.

Types of dog leashes and leads

Retractable cord leads are very popular as they give the dog more freedom while still being under control. These come with a one hand braking system which works with the touch of a button, with lengths 16 ft to 26 ft. There is a small retractable lead that is only about 10ft that fits in your pocket.

Slip leads such as the Rope Slip Lead allow for ease of use, adjustable leather slide eliminates slipping off yet releases easily in relaxed position.

Some Personalized dog collars and leads come as a set and are popular they have your dogs name and perhaps contact details also.

Very short leads, used for training and control are only about 16 inches long, there are also multi purpose leads that allow you several options.

Safety reflective dog collars and leads such as the Glo-N-Go Lead make your dog visible at night and early morning for owner who like to jog there are hands free reflective dog leashes, such as the Sporn Reflective Multi Leash

When walking your dog on the lead the correct position is to have the dog walking on your left close to your leg.
