Dapple Dachshund coat patterns
stands out from the others

The Dapple dachshund really stands out from the crowd, no one is exactly the same as the other, some people just love the dapple doxie and just have to have one.

They are one of several patterns that appear in this breed such as piebald, double dapple, brindle...

there are also a variety of coat colors, that's the great thing about the dachshund there is such a choose.

What is a Dapple Dachshund

Not the easiest pattern to describe, but I will give it a go. Dappled dogs have lighter areas intermingled with darker areas of color and occur in all colors, sometimes the dappling shows as spots or splotches which may be all over the coat or only in small areas.

Even if a dachshund only has one dapple spot he is designated as dapple. In other breeds of dog this type of color is called merle. If the base color is light the dappling can be hard to see, this dog often has blue eyes or some dapples may even have one blue and one brown eye.

On the fun side of things some may say it looks like they have been painted by a mad man, who could not makeup his mind what color they should be, but really it all comes down to the breeding.

The dapple coat in dachshunds is cause by a dominant gene and may not follow the coat color of mum or dad, but one parent must be a dapple to produce a dapple pup. Breeding from a lightly dappled can produce heavily dappled pups.

To breed a puppy one of the parents must show the pattern. Here is Lolita a smart black and cream dapple from Grendox Dachshunds, wow what a unique little doxie.

Popular Patterns

Red

This pattern is often difficult to see in the adult dog. Sometimes other patterns, also appear such as piebald or brindle. Here is Patches a red dapple, looks like something has captured his interest.

Black and Tan

Also known as the silver dapple as it has a silver appearance. These coat patterns do not have any associated health problems. My name is Delilah I'm a lovely black and tan dapple, having a sit down in the grass.

Chocolate and Tan

This pattern is unusual and these dogs will have brown to light brown nose and nails and usually brown eyes. Here is a one of a kind chocolate and tan dapple, from breeder, Crystal's Dachshund Crossings, what unusually markings.

Chocolate and Tan Dapple Dachshund

Dapple dachshund are popular today as many people like the unusually color mixes. Dapple dachshunds do not have the congenital problems that the double dapple experiences.

Double Dapples

Yes there are double dapple dachshunds, how can that happen, easy by breeding two dapples together. This pattern usually has some areas of white such as on the nose, neck, paws or tail. These dogs are prone to congenital problems, especially if the color is in the eyes or ears sometimes resulting in blindness or deafness.

It has been noted that not all dogs with this coat pattern have problems but some breeding lines carry the problem genes and prospective owners need to be aware.

There is quite a bit of controversy with the double dapple pattern due to the potential problems of breeding a healthy dachshund.  The Dachshund Club of America in 2007 removed the words double dapple from the breed standard and now only dapple is allowed.

Experienced breeders who study their dogs pedigree well, can often successfully breed double dapple doxies which do not have problems, as not all of these dogs are affected, but the risk is there so not many tend to do this.

Dapple Doxies appear in all coat varieties smooth haired, wire haired and long haired. I'm Katie a black and tan double dapple from KC'S Miniature Dachshunds Texas,USA.

So now you know a little more about this amazing pattern and how they get those dapples. This pattern may not be for everyone, but you will probably agree with me they are one of a kind and they deserve there place as part of the dachshund breed.
