Peeing inside
by: Mark - Dachshund Owner Guide

Thank you for your question.

The first thing you need to do is restrict access to the house, that way you can keep a better eye on him. When he is with you, watch him to get to know the signs when he is looking for a place to go pee, when he goes quiet and starts sniffing around for a spot, that is when you take him outside. If you are going out keep him in a small area, perhaps the laundry somewhere like that, enough space for his bed, food and water bowl and a very small walking area.

Inside the house use a toilet training mat or litter box, get him used to peeing on them. When using the mats you can slowly start to move them towards the door and out the door eventually.

Take him out after every meal and walk him around the garden to help stimulate him to go. Take him out to the toilet before you go to bed and when you get up first thing in the morning. If using a crate, you could use a few toilet training pads in the crate, for when he can't hold it.

Any accidents inside need to be cleaned up straight away, take him outside and give him a toilet command like go wees or whatever you want, so he knows what you mean when you give him the command. When cleaning up accidents you need products that will take his scent away to prevent him from going back to that same spot, white vinegar and baking soda works well - see our previous pee question for how to use these two products.

Also see our toilet training page to help you learn more about training your puppy.

Best of the luck Haydee, just remember be consistent, you should win through in the end.
